Economic Call to Action

As a candidate for City Council in District 8, I am committed to addressing an issue that impacts not only my district but also Chattanooga as a whole. The 2024 State of Black Chattanooga document revealed disparities that cannot be ignored if we hope to create a more equitable and prosperous future for all residents.

Despite Black residents comprising 29.4% of Chattanooga’s population, they own only 2.2% of the city’s employer firms. In contrast, white-owned businesses outnumber Black-owned businesses at a ratio of 10:1. These figures reflect deep gaps in wealth and economic opportunity, which have ripple effects throughout our community. This challenge is especially urgent in District 8, where more than 50% of residents are Black.

The potential benefits of closing these gaps are undeniable. If Black unemployment were reduced to the regional average, with median-wage jobs becoming accessible, it would inject an additional $134 million into the local economy. Furthermore, lifting Black families out of poverty to the median wage level would contribute $93 million to the Chattanooga region. These are not just abstract numbers—they represent families thriving, communities growing, and a stronger local economy for everyone.

District 8 is uniquely positioned to lead the way in addressing these disparities. Individuals in our community have the power to create real change by supporting and investing in local Black-owned businesses, mentoring young entrepreneurs, and participating in skill-building programs that prepare residents for higher-paying jobs. By coming together as neighbors, we can foster an environment where everyone has the tools to succeed.

Building generational wealth is a key part of this vision. When families can create, preserve, and grow financial resources over time, they not only lift themselves out of poverty but also contribute to the long-term health and stability of our district. This means ensuring access to education, homeownership opportunities, and business ownership—the cornerstones of generational wealth that can transform lives for years to come.

Another key opportunity lies in the creative usage of vacant or underutilized buildings within our district. These spaces can be repurposed into hubs for entrepreneurship, community centers for seniors and youth, or affordable housing, offering residents new avenues for growth and connection. By leveraging these resources, we can revitalize our neighborhoods while empowering individuals to take charge of their futures.

I am committed to initiatives that create real opportunities for the people in our district. With a proven track record of fostering solidarity and creating conditions where meaningful change can become a reality, I believe we can work together to close these gaps and build a thriving District 8 that benefits all. This is more than just a campaign promise—it’s a call to action for residents, business leaders, and policymakers alike. By investing in our community’s potential, we ensure a future where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
