WHY ELECT ME?
I was raised by parents who understood service to others. My mother was a public school teacher and my father contributed time to the planning commission in our county – serving as the chairperson throughout most of his multiple terms. Both were involved in civic organizations, and my father was involved so much that we had only a couple of nights a week when he wasn't away at a meeting.
As a 30-year leader, and ultimately pastor, in the United Methodist Church, I practiced engagement and listening for a living.
I have volunteered with dozens of organizations throughout my adult life, I have consistently adopted the same mantra. I understand that my life has afforded me certain privilege. That privilege must be converted back into work that serves my community.
I am equal parts advocate and audience; thinker and listener; strategist and team member. The city of Chattanooga deserves public servants who display multi-faceted skills. It also requires me to understand who I am and what I bring to the table as much as I recognize who I am not and where I can grow.
We must renounce hate in all its forms, even the appearance of such. We need to challenge structures of violence as a way to deal with our problems. We need to listen better. We need leaders to lead by example, share responsibility, and find solutions to the growing challenges of our city. We must move beyond only expressing regret, doing nothing, and blaming others.
We are strong and we are creative. Our talents are as rich in our neighborhoods as they are in our board rooms. Prioritizing the ideas of those in control will never achieve the results best for our city.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME
My husband of 27 years, Mike, and I make our home in the Park Central neighborhood of Chattanooga. Mike is an accomplished veterinarian and avid runner.
I received an undergraduate degree from Shepherd University, a Masters in Integrated Marketing & Communications from West Virginia University, and a Masters in Theological Studies from Iliff School of Theology, University of Denver.
I own and operates Biased Apparel, a clothing company I started in 2011. I'm the CEO of Work of Place, a consulting firm that assists faith communities in understanding how their buildings and assets can be utilized to improve the economic stability of the neighbors that live around them. I'm the Sr. Director of Communications and Marketing for Convergence, an organization committed to the reshaping of non-profits, congregations, and leaders engaged in theology by creating a more just world for all.
Before joining Convergence, I served as a pastor at St Elmo United Methodist Church and St Marks Church, and as the Director of Creative and Marketing for Top Flight, Inc.
I spend my time watching live music, hiking, reading, and enjoying sports. An easy way to begin a conversation with me is to request photos of my beloved four-legged children, pup Ruthie Bader, and cats Toulouse Eddie, Lord Stanley, and Gordie Downie.
